Common Strength-Training Injuries and How to Prevent Them

Strength training builds power, resilience, and confidence. But when technique, programming, or recovery are neglected, injuries can derail progress fast; especially in youth and high school athletes.


The good news? Most strength-training injuries are preventable.


In this article, we’ll break down the most common strength-training injuries and, more importantly, how to prevent them so athletes can train hard, recover smart, and perform at their highest level.


Why Strength-Training Injuries Happen

Injuries rarely occur because lifting weights is “dangerous.” They typically happen due to:

  • Poor technique

  • Excessive load progression

  • Inadequate warm-up

  • Poor mobility

  • Overtraining and insufficient recovery

  • Lack of supervision or coaching


When training is structured and progressive, strength training is one of the safest activities athletes can perform.

1. Lower Back Strains

Common in:

  • Deadlifts

  • Squats

  • Bent-over rows

  • Improper Olympic lift variations

Why It Happens

Lower back strains often result from:

  • Lumbar rounding under load

  • Weak bracing mechanics

  • Poor hip mobility

  • Loading beyond technical capacity

Prevention Strategy


✔ Teach Proper Bracing

  • 360° abdominal pressure

  • Ribcage stacked over pelvis

  • Neutral spine


✔ Strengthen the Core

  • Dead bugs

  • Palloff presses

  • Farmer carries

  • Anti-rotation drills


✔ Master the Hinge Before Loading

  • RDL progressions

  • Kettlebell deadlifts

  • Tempo work


2. Shoulder Impingement & Rotator Cuff Irritation


Common in:

  • Bench press

  • Overhead press

  • High-volume push training


Why It Happens

  • Excessive anterior (front-side) training

  • Poor scapular control

  • Weak glutes and hamstrings

✔ Emphasize Eccentric Control

Slow tempo squats and split squats improve tendon capacity.


✔ Coach Landing Mechanics

  • Soft landings

  • Knees tracking over toes

  • Absorb force through hips


4. Elbow Tendinitis (Golfer’s or Tennis Elbow)


Common in:

  • Heavy pulling

  • High-volume curls

  • Grip-intensive movements

  • Repetitive strain

  • Sudden increases in volume

Rotate:

5. Hamstring Strains

Gradual increases beat ego lifting every time.

3. Structured Warm-Ups

A proper warm-up should include:

  • Mobility

  • Activation

  • Movement prep

  • Progressive loading


4. Recovery Is Training


Sleep, hydration, and nutrition directly impact injury risk.


5. Individualization Matters


Youth athletes, high school athletes, and college athletes require different progressions.


Youth & High School Athlete Considerations

Because much of our audience includes middle school and high school athletes, it’s important to emphasize:


  • Supervised training dramatically reduces injury risk

  • Strength training does NOT stunt growth

  • Technique-based progressions are critical

  • Bodyweight mastery precedes heavy loading

When done properly, strength training reduces injury risk in sport — it does not increase it.


Final Thoughts

Strength training injuries are rarely random.


They are usually the result of:

  • Poor mechanics

  • Poor programming

  • Poor recovery


When athletes train with structure, patience, and discipline, strength training becomes one of the most powerful injury-prevention tools available.
